Guide

Erectile Dysfunction: Causes, Heart Warnings, Care and Where Vapofil Fits

Quick answer

Erectile dysfunction is ongoing trouble getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex. The NIDDK links it to narrowed arteries, high blood pressure, diabetes, low testosterone and many common medicines (NIDDK: ED symptoms & causes). It can be an early warning of heart disease, so it deserves a doctor visit. Vapofil is a supplement, not an ED treatment; at most it is an extra.

The basics

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) means you often cannot get or keep an erection firm enough for sex. An off night now and then is normal and is not ED.

MedlinePlus, the National Library of Medicine's health site, calls ED common. It turns up more often with age, yet it is not an automatic part of growing older (MedlinePlus: Erectile dysfunction).

An erection needs healthy blood vessels, healthy nerves and the right hormone and brain signals. A problem in any of them can show up in the bedroom first.

Signs that point to ED rather than a bad night

  • The problem happens more often than not.
  • It has lasted for weeks or months.

Causes

What causes erectile dysfunction?

Most ED has a physical cause, often more than one. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) says ED "may be a symptom of another health problem" (NIDDK: ED symptoms & causes).

Health problems the NIDDK links to erectile dysfunction, grouped by the system they affect
SystemConditions named by NIDDKHow it gets in the way
Blood vesselsAtherosclerosis, high blood pressure, strokeLess blood reaches the penis
MetabolismDiabetes, obesityDamages nerves and vessel linings
KidneysChronic kidney diseaseUpsets hormones, nerves and vessels
HormonesLow testosterone, thyroid imbalanceCan lower desire and erection strength
ProstateEnlarged prostateShares risk factors and some medicines
MedicinesAntidepressants, blood pressure drugs, diureticsSide effects on nerves, blood flow or desire

Stress, worry and low mood can add to a physical cause or stand alone.

Early warning

Why can ED be an early warning of heart disease?

Because the penis relies on small arteries that may clog before the larger ones around the heart. Trouble with erections can surface while the heart still feels fine.

Plaque builds slowly in artery walls across the whole body. Smaller vessels have less room to spare. So ED can prompt pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar checks years before a heart problem would show.

See a doctor, not a store shelf

New or worsening ED is a reason to book a checkup, more so with diabetes, smoking or high blood pressure. Chest pain, fainting or an erection lasting more than 4 hours needs emergency care at once.

Medicines

Which medicines can cause erectile dysfunction?

Several common drug groups can. The NIDDK names antidepressants, blood pressure medicines and diuretics (water pills) (NIDDK: ED symptoms & causes). ED that starts soon after a new prescription may be a side effect.

Mood

Antidepressants

Some can lower desire or delay climax.

Blood pressure

Pressure pills

Some groups affect erections more than others.

Fluid

Diuretics

Water pills can play a part for some men.

Never stop a prescription on your own

Stopping a heart, pressure or mood medicine suddenly can be dangerous. Bring a list of everything you take, supplements included, and ask whether a switch is possible.

At the clinic

How do doctors evaluate erectile dysfunction?

  1. Talk

Questions about when it started, morning erections, desire, stress, alcohol, smoking and every medicine you take.

  2. Examine

Blood pressure, weight, pulses and a brief genital and prostate exam where needed.

  3. Test

Blood sugar, cholesterol and, with symptoms, morning testosterone on two separate tests (Urology Care: Low testosterone).

Care options

What treatment options do doctors offer for ED?

Doctors usually start with the cause, then add direct help if needed. MedlinePlus lists oral medicines, devices and lifestyle changes among the main options (MedlinePlus: Erectile dysfunction).

General ED care options a doctor may discuss (described in general terms; your doctor chooses what fits)
OptionWhat it involvesGood to know
Treat the causeControl blood pressure, blood sugar or cholesterol; adjust a medicineProtects the heart as well as erections
Lifestyle changesMore activity, weight loss, less alcohol, stopping smokingGeneral advice with benefits well beyond sex
Prescription pillsA class of oral medicines taken before sexNot safe with nitrates; prescribed after a heart check
DevicesVacuum pumps and similar aidsNo drug involved
Hormone therapyTestosterone, only after a confirmed low levelTwo morning tests under 300 ng/dL plus symptoms first (Urology Care: Low testosterone)

We do not recommend any brand or dose of prescription medicine. Your clinician makes that call.

Hidden drugs

Why do "sexual enhancement" supplements carry a hidden-drug risk?

Because FDA labs keep finding prescription ED drugs inside products sold as herbal. In a May 2026 notice, the FDA reported sildenafil and tadalafil, the active drugs in two prescription ED pills, in a "natural enhancement" supplement that did not list them (FDA: X10 hidden sildenafil/tadalafil).

The FDA's Health Fraud Product Database lists many more sexual enhancement capsules, honeys and chocolates with hidden drugs. It holds only a small fraction of risky products, the agency says (FDA: Health Fraud Product Database).

Danger with nitrates

Hidden ED drugs can drop blood pressure to dangerous levels when combined with nitrates such as nitroglycerin. Men with heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure often take nitrates.

No independent lab test of Vapofil has been published, so nobody outside the company can confirm its contents. Its label lists seven herbal and mineral ingredients and no drug. Our post on hidden drugs in sex supplements covers how to check any product against the FDA list.

Talking about it

How do you raise erectile dysfunction with a partner or a doctor?

Plainly and early. Doctors hear about ED every week, and silence often worries a partner more than the problem.

With a partner

Pick a calm moment outside the bedroom. Say what you have noticed and that you plan to see a doctor.

With a doctor

Open with the word itself: "I have been having erection problems." Mention when it began, any new medicines, and any supplements.

Supplements

Where does Vapofil fit for a man with erectile dysfunction?

At most as an extra, and never instead of care. Vapofil is a dietary supplement; it is not a drug, and it does not treat erectile dysfunction.

Its printed doses are small next to research amounts. Horny goat weed appears at 8 mg, against the 250-500 mg found in typical products. LiverTox says its claimed benefits are "not proven in rigorous controlled trials" (LiverTox: Horny goat weed). At 10 mg, tongkat ali reaches only one tenth of what men took in the smaller arm of a 2021 trial (LiverTox: Tongkat ali). Check all seven amounts on the Supplement Facts panel.

If you still want to try it after a checkup, the checklist below flags what to raise first.

1. Are you 18 or older?
2. Have you seen a doctor about erection or desire problems?
3. Do you take nitrates, a blood thinner, or blood pressure or diabetes medicine?
4. Do you take lithium, digoxin, testosterone or prostate-cancer medicine?
5. Do you have heart rhythm problems, or liver or kidney disease?
Answer all fiveYour result shows here. It is a checklist, not medical advice.

FAQ

Erectile dysfunction: common questions

What is the most common cause of erectile dysfunction?

Blood vessel problems are among the most common causes, usually from narrowed arteries, high blood pressure or diabetes. The NIDDK also lists kidney disease, low testosterone, thyroid imbalance and medicines. Many men have more than one cause, which is why a full checkup beats guessing.

At what age does erectile dysfunction usually start?

There is no set age, though ED becomes more common as men get older. MedlinePlus notes that it is not an inevitable part of aging. A man in his 30s or 40s with new ED has extra reason to get his heart and blood sugar checked.

Can stress or anxiety cause erectile dysfunction?

Yes, stress, worry about performance and low mood can all cause or worsen ED. Mental causes often sit alongside a physical one, so a doctor still checks blood pressure, blood sugar and medicines. Counseling, alone or with a partner, helps many men.

Can erectile dysfunction go away on its own?

Sometimes, when it comes from a short-lived cause like stress, heavy drinking or a medicine that gets changed. ED that lasts for weeks or keeps coming back should be checked. It can be the first sign of heart disease or diabetes.

Are herbal erection supplements risky?

Some are. The FDA has found hidden prescription ED drugs in many herbal "sexual enhancement" products, and those drugs can be dangerous with nitrates. Buy from a named company with a full label, check the FDA Health Fraud Product Database, and tell your doctor what you take.

Should I tell my doctor I take an herbal supplement for erections?

Yes, always. Herbs such as horny goat weed may lower blood pressure, and some interact with heart, diabetes or mood medicines. Your doctor needs the full list, supplements included, before prescribing anything for ED. Bring the bottle or a photo of its label.
