Tongkat Ali Doses and Extract Ratios: What 100:1 Really Means

Quick answer

A 100:1 ratio means about 100 parts of dry root went into 1 part of finished extract. Vapofil prints 10 mg of tongkat ali extract, made from roughly 1,000 mg of root. The capsules hold 10 mg, not 1,000 mg. The 2021 trial in LiverTox used 100 or 200 mg of extract a day, so Vapofil's amount is a tenth of the lower dose.

The label

What does Vapofil's label say about tongkat ali?

It prints 10 mg of tongkat ali per 2-capsule serving. Next to that number, in brackets, sits a longer phrase about a 100:1 extract and 1000 mg of dry powder.

The ratio

What does a 100:1 tongkat ali ratio mean?

It is a note about manufacturing; it says nothing direct about the dose you swallow. A maker soaks dry root in a solvent, removes the plant fiber, and dries what is left. If 100 grams of root end up as 1 gram of extract, the maker calls it 100:1.

  1. Start with dry root

About 1,000 mg of dried tongkat ali root, by the label's own figure.

  2. Extract and concentrate

Solvent pulls out part of the root's compounds. Much of the bulk is thrown away.

  3. End with a small powder

About 10 mg of extract remains. That is the amount in two Vapofil capsules.

Two makers can both write 100:1 and sell quite different powders.

The big number

Why is "equivalent to 1000 mg" not 1000 mg in the capsule?

Because 1,000 mg is the weight of root the maker says it started with. The capsules hold the 10 mg left after extraction. Multiply 10 mg by 100 and you get the 1,000 mg on the label; that is the whole calculation.

An extract can be more concentrated than raw root, but it does not keep 100 times the useful compounds. Some are lost along the way.

Our reading, not a lab result

Extract ratios are the maker's own claim. Nothing on the bottle lets a buyer check them, and no lab test of Vapofil is published. We treat 10 mg as the real dose.

The same pattern appears on the horny goat weed line: 8 mg of a 10:1 extract, "equivalent to approximately 80mg" of herb. Our horny goat weed post covers that ingredient.

Trial doses

How much tongkat ali did the trials use?

The best-known trial gave men 100 or 200 mg of extract a day. LiverTox, the National Institutes of Health reference on liver injury, summarizes a 2021 study by Chinnappan and colleagues (LiverTox: Tongkat ali). It enrolled 105 men aged 50 to 70 whose testosterone was already under 300 ng/dL.

Free testosterone and its binding protein did not change, and there was no clear athletic benefit (LiverTox: Tongkat ali). LiverTox gives 100 to 400 mg a day as the traditional range. Vapofil's 10 mg is a tenth of the trial's lower dose and a twentieth of the higher one.

Each "Label" bar is drawn to scale against the research dose or daily guideline beside it. Every amount is printed per 2-capsule serving; boron is worked out from the label's 5%. The label's "equivalent to" figures for tongkat ali and horny goat weed describe the dry herb used to make the extract, not what the capsules hold. Studies tested each ingredient alone, not Vapofil.

Two kinds of label

Is a standardized extract the same as a ratio extract?

No. A ratio says how much root went in. Standardization says how much of a chosen marker compound came out, checked by testing each batch.

The 2021 trial used a standardized extract (LiverTox: Tongkat ali). That matters, because results from one tested extract do not carry over to an untested powder of unknown strength.

Ratio claim

"100:1 extract"

Input weight against output weight. It sounds large, but it gives no compound level and needs no batch test to print.

Standardized

A stated marker percent

A set share of named compounds in every batch. It lets you compare a product with the extract a trial actually tested.

Vapofil's label gives a ratio and no standardization level, so its tongkat ali cannot be matched to the trial extract.

How should you compare tongkat ali amounts across labels?

Compare milligrams of extract with milligrams of extract, and ignore the "equivalent" figure.

  • Find the plain number. On Vapofil it is 10 mg, printed before the brackets.
  • Look for a standardization percent. If none is printed, the strength is unknown.
  • Set it against the trial. The study used 100 to 200 mg of a standardized extract.
  • Check for a lab report. A certificate from an independent lab tells you more than any ratio.

Extra capsules are not a fix; the label says not to exceed two a day. The tongkat ali ingredient page has the short profile.

Safety

What do safety sources say about tongkat ali?

Side effects in trials were uncommon, but long-term safety is not established. LiverTox lists nausea, diarrhea, headache and rash, and says long-term safety is poorly documented (LiverTox: Tongkat ali).

Europe's food safety agency, EFSA, went further in 2021: it said the root's safety "has not been established under any condition of use" (LiverTox: Tongkat ali). Its worry was possible DNA damage.

Operation Supplement Safety, a Department of Defense program, reports tongkat ali products found with lead, mercury or added sildenafil (OPSS: Tongkat ali). It advises choosing products with independent third-party testing.

WebMD lists interactions with propranolol, testosterone therapy and the prostate-cancer drugs darolutamide and enzalutamide (WebMD: Eurycoma longifolia). Our side effects page covers all seven Vapofil ingredients.

Ask before you start

Talk to a doctor first if you have a heart rhythm problem, liver or kidney disease, prostate trouble or a cancer history, or take any of those medicines. Stop and get checked for dark urine or yellow skin or eyes.

Bottom line

What is the takeaway on tongkat ali ratios?

Read the 10 mg, not the 1,000 mg. Vapofil holds a tenth of the lower trial dose, as a ratio extract with no stated standardization, and has no trial of its own. It is not a testosterone treatment; men with symptoms need a doctor and two morning blood tests.

FAQ

Tongkat ali doses and ratios: common questions

Why do supplement makers print extract ratios?

A ratio describes how the extract was made, and it lets a small dose be paired with a much larger root figure. On Vapofil, 10 mg of extract sits beside 1000mg of dry powder. In our reading, the 10 mg is the number that tells you the dose.

Does a 100:1 tongkat ali extract hold 100 times the compounds of plain root?

Not necessarily. It may be more concentrated per milligram, but by how much is unknown. Extraction loses some compounds and keeps others, so 100:1 does not mean 100 times the effect. Only a stated standardization level or a lab report tells you what the powder holds.

Which tongkat ali doses were tested in men over 50?

100 mg and 200 mg of standardized extract a day for 12 weeks, in 105 men aged 50 to 70 with low testosterone, as summarized by LiverTox. Total testosterone went up by roughly 9% and 12.5%. Free testosterone did not change. Vapofil holds 10 mg.

How many Vapofil capsules would equal the 100 mg tongkat ali trial dose?

Twenty, ten times the two-capsule serving, so it is not an option. The label says not to exceed the recommended dose, and 20 capsules would also multiply the six other ingredients. If testosterone is your worry, ask a doctor about blood tests instead.

What does standardized mean on a tongkat ali supplement?

It means each batch is tested to hold a set percentage of chosen marker compounds. That lets a product be compared with the extract used in a study. Vapofil's label gives a 100:1 ratio but no standardization percent, so that comparison is not possible.
